Mavericks beaten at last
The two unfinished matches from week 5 produced the drama of the fortnight. Outcasts led the unbeaten leaders 2-1, and Robert Smith's 3-1 win over Jonathan Gower-Jackson pulled the Mavericks level, so the tie came down to Mark Henson against Richard Cretney. Cretney took the first two games 15-9, 15-9, but was then forced to retire injured, handing the match to Henson and the Mavericks their first defeat of the season. It was a cruel way to lose, and we wish Richard a speedy recovery.
The leaders hit back tonight, beating Racketeers Pioneers 4-1, with Magnus Lamprecht winning two 16-14 games against Thomas Mcalear. The Pioneers took their only point in the match of the night. David Johnson won the first two games against Keane Brentley 22-20 and 16-14, lost the fourth 18-16, and then ran away with the decider 15-7.
Outcasts rise from the bottom
Outcasts followed up the win over the Mavericks by beating CES Sharks 4-1. Elliot Henson beat Sarah Simpson 15-13, 15-13, 15-13, about as tight as a straight-games win can be. Greg Ansara won the Sharks' point, 15-11 in the fifth against Peter Ginty. A week earlier the Sharks had caused the shock of week 5, whitewashing the Pioneers 5-0. Outcasts have gone from bottom to second in two weeks.
